Improvements and repairs in the local rural school

Escuela Luis Alfonso Velasquez School Improvement Project 2010

The Laguna de Apoyo Biological Research Station "Estacion Biologica" coordinated and financed repairs and improvements in the Escuela Luis Alfonso Velasquez. This school attends the educational needs of 50 children who live in Laguna de Apoyo. Thanks especially to Christine Bruxer for her fundraising for this worthy project!!! The project budget ran just under US$1000.00. Not bad for a year of financial crisis.

This was the letrine. A three-seater. The termites had destroyed the wood structure, and the paint, well, you can see for yourself. The doors would no longer work at all. We adjusted the doors, changed the structural beams, applied anti-termite treatment, and painted the entire thing.

Almost the entire school interior and all of the exterior was painted with an oil-based paint. There is a well on the property which had long ago gone dry. We dug it an additional 4 meters and then placed a submersible pump in it, and sealed the top with a large reinforced concrete top with a heavy duty padlock.

Believe it or not, someone is down there!!! What a job. The parents, CPC, and other members of the community did an awesome job. The result of all this well rehabilitation:

Pauraque nest

We encountered a Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis) nest on the edge of the access road behind Estacion Biologica, consisting of two spotted eggs in leaf litter. These photographs were taken after the first chick had hatched, leaving one egg intact.

In Nicaragua, the Pauraque is called "pocoyo". Only one meter from this egg were an adult and a chick, both in the photograph below. Can you find them?

Our nights are often filled with the calls of Pauraques. They sit in the paths and roads in wait of flying insects which they capture on the wing. The Pauraque is one of over 225 bird species found in Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve. The staff at Estacion Biologica includes several knowledgeable professionals who can take you on a birdwatching excursion. Please contact us if you are interested in birdwatching while you are visiting Nicaragua.

Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve gets Management Plan

Laguna de Apoyo and the volcanic crater in which is lies have been decreed a part of the National System of Protected Areas since April,1991 (Decreto 42-91). Nonetheless, the Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve has been without management guidelines until 19 years later. With the stroke of a pen, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment (MARENA), Juanita Argenal, approved the pioneering, first management plan for the reserve. This document was the result of a team of specialists coordinated by Jeffrey McCrary, and involving the staff of FUNDECI/GAIA in technical and strategic issues. The management plan development project was managed administratively by CLUSA and financed by the Spanish National Parks Authority. This management plan, furthermore, was groundbreaking in the context of Nicaraguan natural resource management documents, for two reasons: the plan included a professional treatment of the wild natural resources present, with extensive, accurate species lists; the plan treated the needs of the community in more than a dozen meetings in which the logical framework strategy was applied to identify needs and determine programs and actions to meet the community needs. The following article is taken from La Prensa, April 6, 2010, reporting the official inauguration of the management plan.

FUNDECI/GAIA is collaborating with Colegio Cristiano en Nicaragua, a new school in a very poor neighborhood in Leon. This school is operated by some Churches of Christ in the United States and all the students are chosen on the basis of extreme financial hardship. All students in this school receive their education completely free of charge. Here we present some images from the first "graduation" of the kindergarten level. The graduation was attended by various sponsors from the US and volunteers of FUNDECI/GAIA.

Children of Laguna de Apoyo Read Books!

The children of Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve live without the benefits of our children in the First World. Their parents don't have cars, most don't even have refrigerators to store cold foods. They live simply, and without opportunities to know distant places, or expensive toys. Books are not even found in their houses. Our friend Christine decided to add a new dimension to the lives of our children here, by coordinating a campaign to donate books to the Escuela Luis Alfonso Velasquez. She brought with her from Canada, more than forty books appropriate for primary school-age children in Spanish, on a wide variety of educational topics. Our study center supports the local children to promote the best education possible.

Reading is a gateway to other countries, continents, and planets. Yet, the children of Laguna de Apoyo come from families with little income, parents without education, and the school is without resources. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Christine McGregor, the children of Avon Maitland School in London, Ontario, Canada, and several publishers who made discounts and donations, the children of Laguna de Apoyo can feed their imaginations and develop their reading skills in the process.

Misa Campesina Nicaraguense

Misa Campesina

The Nicaraguan Peasant Mass "Misa Campesina Nicaraguense" was composed in a collaboration principally by Carlos Mejia Godoy, inspired by Ernesto Cardenal. This mass expresses the struggles of the poor in the context of liberation theology. This mass follows the liturgical tradition, and incorporates Nicaraguan folk music motifs. The Misa Campesina Nicaraguense was banned from use in church, but it can still be heard in performances in Batahola neighborhood of Managua.

I believe in you, comrade,
Christ the man, Christ the worker,
victor over death.
With your great sacrifice
you made new people
for liberation.
You are risen
in every arm outstretched
to defend the people
against the exploitation of rulers;
you are alive and present in the hut,
in the factory, in the school.
I believe in your ceaseless struggle,
I believe in your resurrection.
